50% of mental health issues are developed by the age of 14 and two thirds by the age of 23.
Identifying mental health issues in young people is vital if they are to go on to have happy productive lives.
Unfortunately, most people are not well versed in the warning signs of mental health issues or in how to deal with those issues once they are identified.
Our Youth MHFA Courses can help.
Young people often fall victim to unidentified and untreated mental health issues that others assume are just part of growing up. Sometimes they are. Other times, however, there are more serious issues in play that require attention.
Our Youth MHFA Courses are specifically designed to teach you to recognize the difference between ‘growing pains’ and mental health issues in young people. They also provide you with the tools to potentially intervene in productive ways ranging from non-judgemental listening to guiding the young person to more comprehensive professional help.
Mental health issues among young people is on the rise
As the world becomes a more crowded place and the future grows ever more uncertain it is often young people who feel the stress and uncertainty the most. Statistics indicate that the prevalence of mental health issues among young people has risen markedly in recent decades and that anxiety and depression have become major concerns.
Teenagers in particular have shown an increasing tendency toward self-harm and other manifestations of mental health problems and yet these issues are almost entirely bypassed by the news media and are kept out of the public discourse. If we are to support young people we must shine a light on the issue and remove the stigma associated with the term “mental health issue”.
Promoting the ability to support
It is vital that mental health issues affecting young people be recognised and treated as early and comprehensively as possible. Up to now, however, people have been taught to “mind their own business” when it comes to others. Under normal circumstances that can be considered sound advice, but when it comes to mentally or emotionally distressed youngsters it is vitally important that we not shy away from recognising a mental health issue or disability. Our youth mental health first aid courses enable you to do just that, and to learn effective ways of guiding them to further support.
The cost of inaction is unacceptably high
It has long been known that, if left untreated, certain mental health issues in young people can become precursors to more serious outcomes when they reach adulthood. But it does not have to be so. By becoming a mental health first aider you can make a quantifiable difference in the life of a young person. And our MHFA courses will teach you how to do just that. The need is great and the cost of inaction unacceptably high.
Our Youth MHFA Mental Health Aware Course is a half-day course focused on raising awareness of the mental health issues facing today’s young people. Over the course of three hours, we cover issues such as anxiety and depression and look at how recent events have affected the mental health of millions. We also provide mechanisms that enable you to relate to, rather than to judge, what young people are going through.
Our Youth MHFA Champion Course is a 1-Day course that takes a more comprehensive look at the mental health issues affecting young people. You learn how to identify signs of trouble or distress, how to address the affected young person effectively, and how to shepherd them toward the appropriate help and support.
The Youth MHFA Mental Health First Aider Course is a 2-Day course that examines the mental health challenges facing young people in the UK today from various perspectives. The goal is to provide you with the ability to spot trouble and get involved in a way that is both non-threatening and productive.
