At Mental Health & Life our mission is to remove the stigma attached to mental health issues and to provide people with the tools required to assist someone in need. There are thousands of places in the UK where one can learn CPR and other forms of bodily first aid, yet until now there has been no equivalent where people can learn forms of mental first aid.
We consider that a regrettable reality and our purpose is to help bring it to an end. To do that we offer an array of in-person and remote learning experiences where people from all walks of life can learn how to recognise mental health emergencies and intervene in a useful manner. It’s important work and we are committed to using every tool at our disposal in order to see it done. That includes self-paced MHFA courses, blended mental health first aid courses, and of course, in-person learning.
As the name implies a self-paced course is one where you work independently at a pace that suits your schedule. Traditional courses are typically conducted in person and proceed in a strictly controlled fashion with rigid deadlines that must be met when it comes to submitting assignments and the like.
By comparison, our self-paced mental health first aid courses are conducted remotely through an online learning software interface. The course experience is not a communal one, but an individual one. Each person taking the course proceeds at their own speed. There is copious support material available along the way and assessments are taken one-on-one with a qualified instructor.
Self-paced courses, and to a certain extent, blended MHFA courses enable people with busy lifestyles to obtain the training they need within the dynamic of their current lifestyle. For instance, people who work for themselves often keep unpredictable schedules which makes it difficult for them to participate in traditional classes. Self-paced courses are a viable alternative for such individuals.
In many cases, self-paced courses are also more affordable than traditional courses taught in a classroom. That’s because classrooms cost money to build and maintain, as well as to light and heat, and it costs money to hire teachers to show up in person for each class. Remote, self-paced courses are hosted on a server which is a much more cost-effective business model. The savings from this type of e-learning can then be passed on to students.
